In the quiet hills of Hanover in western Jamaica lays Cacoon, a small community, where residents haven’t been able to access running water for over 12 years. This empty tap located in one of the homes in Cacoon stands as a symbol of the hardships the Cacoon community has faced in its search for water.
Cacoon is the place where I grew up, and where my parents, and grandparents, also grew up - a home for generations. Located in remote hills of the parish, our community is so remote you wouldn’t be able to locate it on a map without close inspection, or without knowing it is there. The hills surrounding the village are lush, and there are multiple streams running nearby. Yet as many as three generations have complained about the scarcity of tap water in this village, a situation made worse by climate change today.
