Niyibizi and family pose inside the new rented house in Mageragere, situated on the outskirts of Kigali, on February 2nd 2024
Add to CartNiyibizi received 90,000 RWF to facilitate his move when he was told he had to go. Although he had hoped to receive compensation for losing his house, people whose houses were built in the wetlands after 2009 were considered to have been defying government advisories against placing themselves at risk of floods, and other related disasters. They were also believed to have been endangering these fragile ecosystems while building. As a result, compensation for having to move was low, and Niyibizi had no other option but to find rented accomodation further away.
