Gakenke District is known for its picturesque landscapes, which include rolling hills and lush green valleys. The district is predominantly rural, with agriculture being the main economic activity.
Due to the terrain's nature - rolling hills and valleys - landslides occasionally occur in Gakenke, especially during periods of intense rainfall. But they usually result in minimal damage to houses, which are easily repairable. Hategekimana had experienced such damage from small landslides before, but to her knowledge, no one else in the area has ever lost their entire home to them. She never thought that her family would experience this in their lifetime.
