Life has not been easy on Generosa Hategekimana. She had to bear with difficult living conditions early on in life, as she raised a new family in an incomplete house while enduring an abusive marriage. A few years into marriage, her husband abandoned her and left her to raise their four children alone. She then had to deal with her in-laws, who no longer wanted her to occupy the land she had come to call home.

It took many years for the matriarch to complete the construction of her marital home. But when they became aware of the new build, her husband's relatives began to make claims over the house and land, and asked her to relocate. Unyielding, Hategekimana refused to be displaced and when they were of age, she divided the land amongst her children, offering them support to build their own houses as well.
