Hategekimana smiles hopefully at the window frame of her new now almost habitable house. It doesn't sit well with Hategekimana that she is in debt, and this thought prevents her from being able to think calmly about the future. But she already has some plans - she wants to go into pig farming to generate income, and is counting the days until she can move in to realise this plan and work on coming out of debt. In the wake of a fateful night on May 23, 2023, 63-year-old Generosa Hategekimana was abruptly awakened by an unsettling call for distress as one of her daughters realised that their house was succumbing to a landslide. Hategekimana has known this land, located in Gakenke district, Northern province Rwanda as her home for over 30 years, and it has supported her livelihood as a farmer throughout the years. This region of Rwanda’s terrain - rolling hills and valleys - means it is prone to landslides, but they are usually smaller and result in minimal damage to houses, which residents are used to. This landslide was different. As a mother, being able to support her eldest children settling down with their families on this same land was a big achievement for Hategekimana. Seeing their home destroyed in a span of a few hours was devastating.
